Applied Art Sampler Course, Evening Classes- dot-art at the Bluecoat
Thursdays 6.45pm-9.30pm starting 8th March 2012 (£144 for 9 sessions / £18-23 per session).
Offering a diverse range of applied art sessions from felt-making to book-binding to papermaking, there’s bound to be something here to delight and entertain.

Program:
A nine week course offering the opportuntiy to try a new skill every week.
Week One - Batik
Tutor - Barbara Meynell
Explore the exciting art of batik using various techniques on paper and cotton. You will create your own designs with hot wax and Procion dyes, experimenting with colour and line in a spontaneous way. No drawing experience is needed, and you will be able to select pieces for card - making or abstract pictures
Week Two - Digital Photography
Tutor - Jazamin Sinclair and Jackie Stevens
Get to grips with the basic manual functions on your digital camera (compact, bridge or DSLR) which will help you to understand how to get the best out of different light conditions and to make sure you get the shot you want, including using exposure depth of of field and white balance
Week Three- Ceramics
Tutor - Elizabeth Elston
Hand building using slabs of clay is an exciting way to create ceramic work. As you make your own unique individual sculptures you will also get the chance to decorate your work, exploring different ways of printing onto the clay whilst gaining ideas for future creations.
Week Four- Paper Making
Tutor - Sheila Jones
Simple,easy paper making for all. Have a go at making your own cards, wrapping paper or artwork for presents and find out how easy it is to make your own paper at home. You can also bring additional materials (leaves, seeds, petals, glitter etc) along to add to your creations if you wish.
Week Five- Watercolour
Tutor - Angela Burton
The emphasis of this session will be on developing confidence and skills in watercolour painting. A brief introduction on how paint and paper work together will be followed by opportunities to explore colour mixing, wet into wet techniques and laying a wash.
Week Six- Book Binding
Tutor - Lucy Wilson
Combine your creative skills to make your very own beautiful book. Starting from the very beginning, learn bookbinding by stitching, gluing, folding and pressing step by step. Not only will you make your own unique, one- off book in the session, you will remember this useful skill for life. You can further create gifts for your friends and family as well as making books to bind your work whether you love to write, paint, draw or love to keep a diary. Help us revive this wonderfully traditional craft.
Week Seven- Stop Motion Animation
Tutor - Tommy Ollerenshaw
Stop motion animation is the one of the oldest and easiest forms of animation. You can bring ANYTHING to life!! Even make an orange peel itself! During the session you will learn the basics of this fun form and come away with a DVD of your work to show your friends and family.
Week Eight- Felt Making
Tutor - Elaine Adams
Felt making is an old and natural process which can produce wonderfully subtle variations in colour, texture and volume. In this taster workshop, students will learn the basic wet felting process by bringing together wool fibres to create a small wall hanging. The process will include some experimentation with other fibres and threads to enhance the felt piece.
Week Nine- Collage
Tutor - Maria Bayliss
In this taster session we will explore the use of collage as a form of expression by using our own observational skills and creativity to develop a piece of artwork. We will also look at the work of 20th and 21st century artists whose work influenced and promoted the use of collage as an art form.

Participants will need to bring their own basic materials on occasion, but most equpiment and materials will be provided.
